Time limit under Land Acquisition Act,

Our agricultural land in Nashik (Maharashtra) district have been acquired by Govt of Maharashtra (Collector) about 12 years back. From that date land has not been put to use by the Maharashtra Govt. for which it was acquired. I wish to know that is there any time limit under the act that such acquired land must be put to use for the intended purpose or is required to be returned to the owner.

One time limit prescribed under the statute is that of declaring the award within 2yrs of declaration. Exception therein is that court should not have stayed the proceedings. If so, the time during which stay was in place would be excluded in calculating the 2year period. There are other exceptions to this. One of them is that possession should not have been taken.
Few more facts and specific dates(Notification, Possession, Award) are to be examined to give a definite answer.
Land Acquisition Act

The land was acquired by Special Land Acquisition Officer in 1981 (Date of an final award) for Rehabilitation and settlement of Mula Dam Project
1) Till date (12.01.2013) the government has not taken possession.
2) Compensation was not taken at that time by my grandfather
Now my question is
1) What is the maximum period within which the government should utilize the land for the purpose for which it is acquired.
2) Is there any way that we can fight for the compensation 3) The land which was declared excess during that time (1979), is now no more excess land due to increase in family member
4) Moreover we get supply of water from mula dam once in a year (situation is changed a lot after 30 years
5) Is there any way that we can get our land back
